Padres trade for Randy Williams
With the Tacoma Rainiers, Williams struck out 64 and held left-handed hitters to a .178 batting average (16-for-90). He also was stellar at home, going 4-0 with a 1.88 ERA and seven saves while 3-2 with a 5.80 ERA on the road. In the eighth inning and beyond, Williams held the opposition to a .169 average.
The Texas native made his Major League debut September 11 against the Boston Red Sox and appeared in six games, posting a 5.79 ERA. He did not allow a run in his final three outings while recording three strikeouts.
Originally selected by the Chicago Cubs in the 12th round of the 1997 First-Year Player Draft, Williams is 22-11 with a 3.17 ERA and 251 strikeouts in 155 games over parts of five minor league seasons.
Billy Hogan, who was selected by the Padres in the fifth round of the 2003 First-Year Player draft, appeared in a combined 74 games between Single-A Fort Wayne and Short-A Eugene in 2004.
The 21-year-old infielder hit a combined .219 (57-for-260) with three home runs and 28 RBI. He was benched at the tail end of the year after an inconsistent year. Hogan breathes baseball and admittedly did not think of much else. That could have worn him down into a deeper funk as he mentally chastised himself each time he fared poorly.
Over parts of two minor league seasons, Hogan has a posted a .265 average (133-for-501) with seven home runs and 71 RBI. The trade may turn out to be a good thing for Billy as he needed to get away from some bad habits he had developed.
