Mariners claim 13 of the top prospect spots

The Seattle Mariners land 12 of their prospects on Baseball America's post-season Top-20 lists, showing that the system remains strong despite a number of graduations in 2013.

A good check on the strength of an organization is Baseball America's annual League Top-20 Prospects series that runs at the end of each season. They just wrapped up this year's list and Seattle again had a strong showing, landing 12 different players in 13 spots on the lists, tying with St. Louis, division rival Houston, Toronto and Arizona's systems for the 8th highest total in either league.

Here is a breakdown by league for those 12 players with the ranking in their respective league's Top-20 in parentheses.

Appalachian League

Edwin Diaz (9)
Wilton Martinez (13)

Northwest League

D.J. Peterson (3)
Austin Wilson (5)
Jack Reinheimer (14)
Lars Huijer (18)

California League

Patrick Kivlehan (7)
Chris Taylor (11)

Southern League

Taijuan Walker (4)
Brad Miller (13)
Julio Morban (17)

Pacific Coast League

Taijuan Walker (6)
Nick Franklin (9)

It is worth noting that three of those players debuted in Seattle this season, with Franklin and Miller actually playing enough to exhaust their rookie status while securing starting spots and Walker showing enough that the 21-year-old is very likely looking at a spot in the 2014 Opening Day starting rotation for the Mariners.
