Drafted by Montreal in the third round (No. 75 overall) in 2000 ... Traded to Cleveland with INF Brandon Phillips, LHP Cliff Lee and 1B-OF Lee Stevens for RHPs Bartolo Colon and Tim Drew, 6/27/2002.

Recruited to play football (option quarterback) and baseball by University of Washington, but signed multi-million dollar deal with Expos instead. ... Hit .293 in 55 games in first pro season, 2000, in the Class A Gulf Coast League ... Hit .268 with 32 steals at Class A Clinton in 2001 ... Split 2002 between Class A Brevard City in the Expos' system and Class A Kinston after trade to Indians (batting .343 with 14 steals in 47 games after the deal) ... Won the Lou Boudreau Award as the top position player in the Indians' organization in 2003 after hitting .304 with 13 homers, 78 RBI and 10 steals in 128 games at AA Akron ... Won Larry Doby Award as the MVP of the All-Star Future's Game in Chicago for going 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI ... A member of Team USA in the Olympic qualifying tournament in Panama in the fall of 2003.

Opened 2004 season at Class AAA Buffalo and after a slow start, hit .344 (43-for-125) with 14 RBI in 28 games in June. ... Made MLB debut 7/21/04 as a defensive replacement at Jacobs Field vs. Chicago. ... Got first MLB hit (an RBI double) off Kansas City's Mike Wood, 7/23/04. ... First MLB homer was off the Royals' Zack Greinke, 7/25/04. ... Sent back to Buffalo, 8/30/04 and hit .333 with two homers and seven RBI in nine playoff games to help Bisons win the International League championship. ... Overall at Buffalo, he hit .287 with eight homers, 51 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 101 games. ... Hit .246 with four homers, 24 RBI and two steals in 43 games for Cleveland.
