Signed by the Mariners as a free agent on Dec. 19, 1982. He's spent his entire professional careers with the Mariners organization.

2003 Highlights:
  • Stayed healthy for the majority of the season, playing in 145 games
  • Batted .294 with 25 2B, 24 HR and 98 RBI, doing so despite being the slowest baserunner in baseball
  • Recorded hit No. 2,000 on May 2 in Chicago, going 2-4 from the plate
  • Named AL Player of the Month for May, when he led the majors with 30 RBI and 10 HR
  • Had hitting streaks of 10, 9 and 8 games
  • Became Mariners all-time leader in total bases with a single on April 24 vs. Cleveland, giving him a career-total of 3,317
  • Voted to the All-Star game as the AL's starting designated hitter
