The Mariners have fired GM Bill Bavasi, who has taken the majority of the blame for the poor performance of the team this season.

The Mariners have decided to fire GM Bill Bavasi and replace him in the interim with Lee Pelakoudis.

In a statement, CEO Howard Lincoln said: "We have determined new leadership is needed in the GM position. With a new leader will come a new plan and a new approach. A search will begin immediately for a permanent GM, and Lee will be a candidate for the position."

The timing makes sense beyond just the terrible performance of the team. If the M's weren't going to retain Bavasi past this season, it follows that the team should try to replace him before this year's trading deadline so that the new GM can start shaping the club's future this year.

A press conference is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
