Ramirez Will Be Second-Half Starter

Posted Jul 7, 2007

Manager John McLaren will name his starting rotation for the second half of the season on Saturday, and it seems a sure thing that left-hander Horacio Ramirez will be in the mix. Ramirez hasn't pitched for the Mariners in 40 days, but he came out of a second injury rehabilitation assignment Thursday in good shape.

He allowed one hit, one walk and one run in six innings, throwing 89 pitches.

He'll throw one more time, on Tuesday in Peoria, Ariz., at the Mariners' minor league complex, which would put him in line to return to the rotation July 15 against the Tigers or July 16 against the Orioles. He's likely to take Ryan Feierabend's spot.

McLaren and bullpen coach Jim Slaton, both of whom live in the Peoria area, will be on hand Tuesday to watch.
Ramirez says his left shoulder tendinitis has cleared up and that he felt great Thursday.

MARINERS 7, A'S 1: Adrian Beltre's second career five-hit game included two solo homers and two doubles as he helped the Mariners defeat AL ERA leader Dan Haren. Beltre got the first of his homers and both of his doubles off Haren, against whom he is a career .448 (13-for-29) hitter.

Seattle, which went 0-9 in Oakland last season, stretched its road record against the A's to 3-1 when DH Jose Vidro delivered a two-run double in the seventh to break a 1-all tie.

NOTES, QUOTES

--RHP Jason Davis was designated for assignment before Friday's game. The Mariners like Davis' power arm, but 25 walks in 37 innings combined between Cleveland and Seattle were a problem, and Seattle needed to make room for RHP Chris Reitsma, who was activated from the disabled list.

--3B Adrian Beltre, whose only previous five-hit game came back on May 28, 2004 against the Mets, has 13 hits in 29 at-bats against Oakland's Dan Haren after going 3-for-3 against him Friday (two doubles and a homer). The other two hits came against the A's bullpen.

--LHP Eric O'Flaherty scored the win in relief and is 6-0 to start his career. That's the best record for a Mariner pitcher at the start of his career.

--RHP Chris Reitsma rejoined the team when he was activated from the disabled list for the second time this season. Reitsma, who hasn't pitched since June 10, becomes the right-handed setup man to J.J. Putz, pushing RHP Brandon Morrow into some seventh-inning situations. Reitsma pitched a perfect inning Friday.

--1B Richie Sexson, who returned to the lineup after 2 1/2 games off Thursday, was back out of the lineup Friday. He's still bothered some by an injured left thumb, but a new problem cropped up Thursday when he took a foul ball off his left foot, hobbling him. He's listed as day-to-day.

--2B Jose Lopez, who is batting .313 since May 24, got a rare day off Friday with Willie Bloomquist getting the start at second base. Bloomquist has earned more playing time because he's hitting .362 in his last 17 starts entering Friday's play, including getting 10 of his 11 RBIs in that stretch.

--RHP J.J. Putz, who was named American League pitcher of the month for June a few days ago, was named the DHL delivery man for June, too. Putz was perfect in 11 saves tries as the Mariners went 18-9 for the month, the best record in baseball.
