Right-hander Cha Seung Baek, who was supposed to be sent to Triple-A Tacoma Friday, instead landed on the disabled list. Already scheduled to be moved out of the rotation in favor of left-hander Ryan Feierabend, Baek wasn't thought to be hurt before Friday. But Baek told the Mariners' medical crew that he'd been struggling with a sore shoulder for a while now. He hadn't wanted to say anything and had tried to pitch through it. That hadn't worked, which is why the Mariners were looking for an option other than Baek before settling on Feierabend. "This came up relatively recently," manager Mike Hargrove said. Baek, who went on the disabled list retroactive to June 17, had allowed 21 runs his last four starts, one reason he'd fallen into disfavor. Still, the Mariners had won three of those four starts, and overall Seattle is 8-3 in the games Baek starts, a mark no Seattle pitcher can match. REDS 16, MARINERS 1. One night after the second of back-to-back shutouts, Mariners pitching was blasted for 16 runs on 16 hits, including five homers, in the most lopsided loss for Seattle since the club moved into Safeco Field midway through the 1999 season. LHP Ryan Feierabend, being asked to try to fill a hole in the Seattle rotation at just 21 years old, had control issues from the start, walking five in 2 2/3 innings. Manager Mike Hargrove, who didn't like the ball-strike calls Feierabend was getting from umpire Mike Winters, was ejected in the second inning. NOTES, QUOTES |
