InsidethePark.com caught up with 5th round selection Mark Lowe, a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher out of the University of Texas-Arlington.

Like most draft eligible baseball prospects Monday, University of Texas-Arlington right-hander Mark Lowe was with his family huddled around the computer waiting for his name to be called.

First he got a call from the Mariners during the third round asking if he'd sign if they chose him in the fifth or sixth round.

"I said I would," said Lowe, a hard throwing 6-foot-3, 180-pounder.

True to their words, Seattle selected Lowe in the 5th round with the 153rd pick overall.

"Everyone started screaming and laughing and crying," said the Texan right-hander. "It was a really happy moment."

Lowe throws both a two-seam and four-seam fastball, a changeup and a slurve. He says the his best pitches are his fastball, which tops out at 96 mph but usually stays in the 91-93 mph range, and his curve. The slider is "coming around nicely," he adds.

UT-Arlington coach Jeff Curtis had nothing but good things to say of his staff ace, who posted a 3.74 ERA in 53 innings of work this season.

"He's one of the best kids that has come through our program," said Curtis. "Great kid, hard worker. He's got very good projectabliity and he's just in the beginning stages of his potential.

"He's got a good arm, a very live fastball and good mound presence. The big thing with him is that he wants to learn."

Adding to the memorable day for Lowe is the fact that it happens to be his 21st birthday.

"It's everything I could ever ask for," said Lowe. "This is something I always wanted to do and it comes on a special day."

As a college draftee, Lowe says he hopes to move through the M's minor league system quickly once he signs.

"I think I'm polished and I've been playing in college for three years," he said. "I think I can get (to the majors) as quick as anyone else can."

Time will tell, but it looks like the M's got a good one in round number five.
