Following Sunday's three transactions, the club trimmed three more on Monday, reducing the number of players in major league camp to 41. Pitchers Tim Cooney, Lee Stoppelman and catcher Travis Tartamella were reassigned to minor league camp following Monday's loss to the Red Sox. All were non-roster invitees.
Stoppelman was dinged for five earned runs in 1 2/3 innings last week. Overall, the lefty reliever's spring ERA is 11.25 in four innings. He allowed six hits, two walks and fanned three. Enemy batters managed a .353 average against Stoppelman.
Early camp standout Cooney yielded nine runs, eight earned, in two innings last week. The left-hander's first Grapefruit League camp ended with a 13.50 ERA over six innings. Cooney allowed nine hits, including a home run, threw three wild pitches and walked four. He struck out eight. Batters hit a collective .333 against Cooney.
All three would seem to be slated to open the season with Triple-A Memphis, with Cooney in the rotation and Stoppelman in the bullpen. There does not seem to be room for all three aforementioned catchers, however.
Following the moves, the Cardinals have 34 roster players and seven non-roster players remaining in Major League Camp.
