From the 2013 draft, four notable preps prospects turned pro in the area: 1st round LHP Trey Ball/Red Sox and 5th round SS Josh VanMeter/Padres both came from Indiana's prep ranks while Missouri's RHP Devin Williams/Brewers went in the 2nd round and LHP Jake Brentz/Blue Jays signed for 3rd round money in the 11th round. Minnesota prep CF Ryan Boldt was the second-best prospect in the above group but justified first round expectations over a strong summer led to a first round signing bonus demand that clubs couldn't meet after a knee injury kept him out all spring. Boldt is joined by Iowa prep RHP Derek Burkamper on campus at Nebraska, but Boldt is the potential star here: he has a chance to go in the top half of the first round if he continues progressing after three years. The 2014 class is deeper in top three round prospects than last year, but doesn't have a prospect that can match Ball right now. I was lower on Ball than most (15th overall in my ranking, went 7th overall) and think Reetz or McKinney could get that high with a strong spring, so I'll take the 2014 class and it's superior depth with comparable high end talent.
Arkansas, LSU and Missouri are the best western-based SEC baseball programs that recruit this area heavily while Notre Dame and Nebraska use some football cachet to steal a few players as well. These five programs account for over half the players on this list. It's worth mentioning that #5 CF Monte Harrison (link is to football profile) is also a notable football recruit for Nebraska, graded as a 3-star recruit and ranked as the 95th wide receiver in the country. It's still an open question as to which sport he may choose but it's looking like he'll have a high six figure to possibly seven figure bonus offer to consider.
