Playing in the thin air has it's perks.
High Desert second baseman Stefen Romero, shortstop Brad Miller, outfielder Julio Morban, catcher John Hicks and catcher/outfielder Jack Marder have all been selected to the Cal League All-Star Team for their performances in the first half the league announced today. Marder will miss the game due to injury, but the other four players are expected to participate next Tuesday, June 19th, after the Mavericks wrap up their first half schedule on Saturday.
Playing their home games in perhaps the most hitter friendly environment in all of minor league baseball, Morban (.343 AVG, 1.029 OPS), Miller (.325 AVG, .967 OPS) and Romero (.357 AVG, .956OPS ) all rank in the Top-8 in their league in both batting average and on base plus slugging. Morban is also tied for 4th in the league in home runs (12), which is a new career high, despite missing some time earlier this season due to injury. Hicks isn't far behind him with 10.
Thanks to the influence of these five hitters, Pedro Grifol's Mavericks lead the league with a .302 team batting average and .862 OPS. No High Desert pitcher was selected for the game. With six games to play in the first half, High Desert is one game out of first place in their division.
