Tidbits from Tacoma

There's been lots of movement in Tacoma recently. Here's a list of what's shakin' in the City of Destiny.

Colbrunn in the House: Greg Colbrunn, one of the Seattle Mariners' key acquistions over the winter, reported to Tacoma for a rehabilitation assignment on Friday. He's been on the disabled list since June 9 with a pulled ribcage muscle. The first basemen went 2-4 in his first game as a Rainier.

Heaverlo Hurtin': Former Washington Husky Jeff Heaverlo, the Seattle Mariners sandwich pick (between first and second round) in the 1999 amateur draft, was placed on the seven-day DL on Friday. He is suffering from a pulled ribcage muscle, which he aggravating in his start on Thursday. He is 4-8 on the season with a 5.47 ERA, coming off a 2002 season which he missed entirely with a torn right labrum.

Falkenborg Back: Former Redmond High product Brian Falkenborg returned to the mound this week after missing over a month with a sore shoulder. Falkenborg (2-1, 2.03 ERA) threw five scoreless innings Tuesday in his first start since returning, and will return to the mound Sunday against New Orleans. He'll face righty Jared Fernandez (5-6, 4.61).

Callin' all Arms: The Rainiers got a boost to the pitching staff this week with the call-ups of right-hander Rett Johnson and southpaw Matt Thornton. Johnson, an eighth-round selection in 2000, won his first start on Friday, pitching seven scoreless innings. Thornton, the Mariners' first-round selection in 1998, got hit hard and took the loss in his first Triple-A start of the year at Las Vegas.

Close Calls: The Rainiers are just 8-16 in one-run games this year, not exactly a stat the team is proud of. In games decided by more than one run, the Rainiers are 26-27.

Should I Stay or Should I Go: Journeyman major leaguer John Mabry made a rehab stop in Tacoma over the week, starring in three games. He went 4-11 with two walks before being activated from the DL in time for the Mariners' series at San Diego on Friday.
