Triunfel A Step Closer To The Bigs

After two disappointing seasons at the Double-A level, former Seattle Mariners prospect Carlos Triunfel has finally found his way out of the Southern League.

As Double-A Jackson Generals' media relations/announcer first announced last night on Twitter, Mariners prospect Carlos Triunfel has been promoted to Triple-A Tacoma. He fills the empty spot on the roster for the Rainiers when rehabbing Luis Rodriguez was promoted to Seattle to fill Brendan Ryan's roster spot. Ryan was placed on the Mariners' disabled list thanks to a shoulder injury. The corresponding move for Jackson was the promotion of shortstop Gabriel Noriega from High Desert.

Triunfel was hitting .280/.339/.436 when Nick Franklin was promoted to Jackson and became the de facto "top prospect" on June 23rd. Triunfel was then shifted to second base temporarily and he went into a 9-47 stretch that dropped his season OPS .052 points while he played five of 13 games at the keystone sack. But over his last 31 games — since he last played a game at second — Carlos has hit .317/.373/.374 and had a streak of reaching base in 22 straight games and on the season he is hitting .281/.340/.392 with a career high 22 doubles.

Triunfel has made 28 errors at short — a majority of them of the throwing variety — but both his fielding percentage and range factor are the highest they've been at the shortstop position in his career, and he does have the physical ability to play the position if he can cut down on the mental mistakes.

After reaching Double-A in 2009, this will be Carlos's first taste of Triple-A baseball. Because Alex Liddi is at third base for Tacoma and Matt Tuiasosopo and Sean Kazmar both are familiar with second base, Triunfel figures to get most of the reps at short for the Rainiers going forward.

Noriega had been hot in his own right for the Mavericks, hitting .322/.361/.503 in his last 39 games (all at shortstop) to bring his season line up to .266/.307/.363 with a career high 25 extra base hits.
